The stink bugs are brownish, carry shield-shaped shells and look
prehistoric. And when swatted with the newspaper -- who can resist
this once? -- release a pungent smell.
The brown marmorated stink bug, as its known in textbooks, has
landed in the Roanoke Valley and the news is wafting around town.
But just what do experts smell in the stink bug's stink?
"Definitely lemon, onion and hay," Aaron Layman, a wine consultant
at Roanoke's Wine Gourmet, said Friday afternoon as he sat in the
store's tasting room.
He swirled a plastic container that held a recently pressed stink
bug and sniffed deeply. "Barnyard aroma ... and some weird chemical
smells."
"I smell gingerbread," fellow consultant ...
