Joe DeLoach defeated his mentor, Carl Lewis, in the 200 meters at
the Olympics Wednesday in a time of 19.75, an Olympic record.
Lewis, attempting to win his third gold medal, instead won the
silver in 19.79. Robson DaSilva of Brazil won the bronze in 20.04.
Lewis got off to a fast start but DeLoach caught him on the
straightaway and leaned past him at the finish.
In the 400 meters, Steve Lewis, a 19-year-old sophomore at UCLA,
upset world record holder Butch Reynolds to win the gold medal in
43.87 seconds.
Reynolds, 24, of Ohio State, charged hard toward the finish line
but could win only the silver medal in 43.93. Danny Everett, 21, a
