Anne Swanson Drew, 92, Howard University Hospital's first patient
ombudsman, died April 12 at Washington Hospital Center of
complications after a fall.
Mrs. Drew, a District resident, was a longtime counselor of nurses
at the city's old Freedmen's Hospital School of Nursing. After the
school closed in 1973, she developed Howard University Hospital's
patient advocate program, the first at a District hospital.
She served as the ombudsman until her 1975 retirement.
She was born in Danville, Va., and graduated from Howard
University in 1936, receiving a master's degree in English there the
next year. She did postgraduate studies at the University of
Chicago.
