For Texas, it was "Remember the Alamo." For the Rough Riders, it
was "Remember the Maine." Soon Fairfax City may have its own battle
cry: "Recapture Rte. 236!"
While the rest of Northern Virginia is spending hundreds of
millions of dollars to get traffic moving faster, a consultant in
Fairfax City has recommended that the city slow down traffic on Rte.
236, an east-west artery that carries out-of-city residents to points
elsewhere. The idea got a warm reception from the council.
"We need to recapture our streets for the benefit of the citizens
and the business owners and the people who use the downtown," said
Fairfax City Council member Robert F. Lederer Jr., echoing language
