Article: 40m pounds for youth football

YOUTH football in Scotland was today set for a 40m pounds cash boost - even if the Euro 2008 bid fails.

Grassroots football is already linked to Scotland's joint-bid with Ireland for the glamour tournament.

However, First Minister Jack McConnell is reported to have given his backing to a cash-for-kids initiative come what may.

McConnell refused to support a solo Scottish bid for Euro 2008 - the third-largest sporting event in the world - when he met SFA chiefs last month.

He believes pumping millions of pounds into youth football at Scottish schools is more politically correct than funding new stadia for a one-off event.
