Article: Howard County Developers Accused of Bulldozing Graveyards

In fast-growing Howard County, some residents say, the living are crowding out the dead.

Century-old graves-some of them the final resting place for slaves, others for founders of the county-have been uprooted by housing and commercial development, say homeowners, preservationists and graveyard buffs.

"Once they're gone, they're gone," lamented Clyde Pyers, chairman of the Cemetery Committee of the Howard County Genealogical Society. More than 100 graves have been lost countywide as development has accelerated, he said.

So far, the charges of graveyard desecration have not been confirmed, and developers say they have not disturbed the dead in the county, where the population has soared ...
