Article: M&S biscuits are investigated over morphine fears

MARKS & Spencer poppy seed biscuits are being investigated by drug chiefs in Singapore because they may contain morphine.

The British retailer has been forced to pull boxes of the snacks from its stores in the country, which has notoriously strict drug laws.

It is thought that eating food with poppy seeds containing morphine may cause urine specimens to test positive for drugs, because the substance comes from the same chemical family as opium and heroin.

A spokeswoman for Singapore's Central Narcotics Bureau said: "Because the Misuse of Drugs Act states that morphine is a controlled drug, you're not supposed to have morphine in any amount."
