I've been always afraid of the dark. As a boy, I kept to a set pattern of going to bed: After turning the lights out, I would run across the room and leap into my bed, high enough so that the monsters underneath didn't grab my feet and drag me down. When I was a young man and had to walk the dog at night, I always went out with running shoes. It was part of my strategy to be inside in a flash if someone jumped from behind that old maple.

So it was with some surprise that I found myself agreeing last February to venture out with a group of entomologists into the Ecuadorean jungle-in the middle of the night.
