Israel put on the glitz Thursday night as Zubin Mehta conducted
the Israel Philharmonic at the foot of the dramatic desert fortress
of Masada.
The Jewish state celebrated its 40th birthday in the shadow of
the mountain, with Gregory Peck and Yves Montand as hosts and an
array of guests including dignitaries from abroad. Some tickets cost
as much as $950.
Despite the stiff prices, the concert, the closing moment in an
otherwise disappointing year of anniversary events, had a distinctly
loose and informal Israeli flavor. Green lasers traced the 40th
anniversary symbol on the mountainside. Blue jeans rubbed up against
tuxedos and evening gowns, and guests waited in line to buy
sandwiches ...
