The three-horse field held a slow pace and ran together
throughout the $17,000 International Gold Cup race on the 3 1/2-mile
Great Meadow course today, but Ozymandias survived trouble on two
fences and overcame Sugar Bee to win by a head.
Uncle Merlin maintained a short lead over most of the 20-fence
course, but that allowed the other two entries to hold a steady pace
before pulling ahead at the final turn and leaving him well behind.
An estimated 15,000 spectators, including Princess Anne of
Britain, attended the event, the largest crowd ever for the
International Gold Cup races, said race organizers.
