SCOTLAND'S first internal police watchdog set up to investigate
allegations of racism by officers has been declared a success.
Lothian and Borders Police became the first force in Scotland to
introduce race relations advisers after the outcry over the handling
of the Stephen Lawrence murder.
Under the initiative, a team of three advisers was appointed by
the Lothian and Borders Police board, an independent body of
councillors from across the region.
The advisers' remit is to monitor race relations work at police
stations across the force area and investigate complaints of unfair
police treatment.
