In previous viewings of Eiko and Koma-the New York-based
Japanese-American dance duo who concluded the Second Japan America
Dance Project at Dance Place this past weekend-I'd come away with
powerful admiration, tempered by nagging reservations.
This time, admiration grew while reservations evaporated,
seeming now not so much baseless as beside the point.
The work had struck me as cold, and almost morbidly, pitilessly
obsessed with life's cruelties. It still looks largely this way to
me-so emotionally distanced as to be nerveless, and unrelievedly
stark in atmosphere.
On the other hand, repeated exposure makes it unmistakably clear
that Eiko and Koma have created an art perfect in ...
