Edgar Bronfman, president of the World Jewish Congress, said
today after talks with top officials in East Berlin that an agreement
has been reached providing for the East German government for the
first time to pay compensation to survivors of the Holocaust.
Bronfman, speaking at the end of a three-day visit to East
Berlin, declined to provide details. There was no official
confirmation from East Germany's communist government.
But it was disclosed that the agreement, to be announced soon, is
to provide for compensation payments totaling at least $100 million.
Much of that money is to go to institutions such as nursing homes and
social welfare agencies that care for survivors of Hitler's ...
