Article: A huge slice of success for man with big appetite

MORE than ten years on, it still irks him. But missing a long- held business ambition by a week pales dramatically when your subsequent empire becomes a byword for stylish leisure.

David Wither, managing director of bar group Montpeliers (Edinburgh), still grimaces when he recounts the missed deadline of his 30th birthday as the starting gun on his pub/restaurant venture.

But with a string of popular eating and drinking venues in Edinburgh and a turnover heading for 13 million pounds this year, it's now more of an irritating fact of life than a troublesome burden.

"I'd always had a personal goal of having my own business by the time I was 30," says Mr Wither. "But I missed it by a week."
