Article: Dukakis' Black Support Lags Mondale's; August Poll Indicates Problems for Party

A new poll of black Americans points to some potential problems for the Democratic Party.

The poll, taken in August and released yesterday by the Joint Center for Political Studies, shows that blacks generally expressed less support for Democratic nominee Michael S. Dukakis than they did at the same time four years ago for Walter F. Mondale. It also reveals that an increasing number of younger blacks say they identify with the Republican Party.

Democrats have come to rely on overwhelming support from blacks, an edge that proved especially potent in 1986 when Democrats regained a majority of seats in the Senate.
