Orel Hershiser and Kirk Gibson will take the bows and Tommy
Lasorda will make the speeches. And they should. You can't pitch
more gamely than Hershiser or lead more bravely than Gibson or prime
the psychological pump better than Lasorda.
But Mickey Hatcher is, and always should be, the symbol of the
world champion Los Angeles Dodgers of 1988.
For Mike Davis and Tim Belcher, for Alejandro Pena and Tim Leary,
for Rick Dempsey and Brian Holton-for all the Dodgers that nobody
knew or respected until the last two weeks-Hatcher's the
