Article: 22 per cent profits rise on menu for Unilever

UNILEVER, one of the world's leading food and consumer products groups, today posted a 22 per cent rise in pre-tax profit.

The Anglo-Dutch maker of products such as Hellmann's mayonnaise, Knorr soups and Dove soap, recorded first-quarter pre-tax profits of 764 million pound.

But the net underlying figure showed a more meagre two per cent rise at GBP 603m on sales that were up four per cent at GBP 7.76 billion.

However, the firm said it was still set to meet its earnings and top brand sales targets under its "Path to Growth" programme, based around 400 key brands.

And, despite the slower-than-expected start to the year, the group also confirmed its previous outlook forecasts.
