ABOUT NANCY REAGAN and her dresses, I can summon no indignation.
In a world of famine and drought, poverty and war, her gowns are a
trivial matter and, moreover, the fact that the first lady is a
clothes horse is not new. What is new is that she did what she said
she would not do, and the White House tried to trivialize her
actions.
"She set her own little rule and she broke her own little rule,"
Mrs. Reagan's press secretary said. We see. Women, like children,
cannot always be expected to tell the truth.
Had that statement not come from a woman, Elaine Crispen, and the
press secretary to the first lady of the land at that, it would have
been denounced as sexist. It's the sort of thing ...
