JOHN SWINNEY is in trouble. The mutterings of discontent dogging his leadership of the SNP have now turned into a real-life challenge for his job.

And although he will, of course, end up with more votes than the little-known Edinburgh-based academic Dr Bill Wilson, the contest could fatally damage his position.

Dr Wilson argues the Nationalists are at risk of "New Labourisation" - too much power in the centre and too little genuine say for the members.

Loyalist MSPs are lining up to pledge their support to Mr Swinney, but three of the party's parliamentary group have publicly welcomed the challenge as a chance for a debate within the party.
