Baltimore Orioles acting president Larry Lucchino said this
weekend that the club will retain "a healthy skepticism" about
signing free agents, in a philosophy that seems diametrically opposed
to past offseasons under late owner Edward Bennett Williams.
In the past, Baltimore has spent millions on veteran free agents.
Now, after last week's organizational meetings in West Palm Beach,
Fla., the Orioles appear to be putting much greater emphasis on the
draft and trades.
"{Free agents} come at a price," said Lucchino. "The price is
high-first-round or second-round picks. The game plan calls for
looking at all the ways we can improve our team. But there is, you
