Ghosts walk in Washington, the most haunted city in the United
States. Especially tonight, as All Hallows Eve draws nigh and the
bridge between then and now opens.
The fogs rise from the banks of the Potomac. The muffled cries
of drowned cats seep up from Tiber Creek from its deep grave in the
ancient viaducts below the Mall. The street lights dim to a gas
glow, transforming faces into oddly familiar visages or frighteningly
strange masks. In the late October starlight, white columns of
classic revival buildings are transfigured into mock mausoleums.
And in the old House of Representatives chamber (now called
Statuary Hall), John Quincy Adams' dying cry reverberates from the
