Amid the chorus of praise that greeted Steve Jobs' unveiling of
the new computer developed by his firm, Next Inc., there was but one
sour note. It came from Bill Gates, the billionaire chairman of
software giant Microsoft.
Behind it lies the rivalry between two brilliant, phenomenally
successful, almost unbelievably rich young men. At 33, they have
been central figures in the development of the personal computer
industry. They now are competing to control the industry's destiny.
Jobs' Next system provides the kind of processing speed and
graphics capability until now found only in computer workstations
that cost three times the $6,500 price of the Next model. Said
