IT'S three o'clock in the morning and the silence of night is pierced by the cries of a baby.

From the next room, there comes a sleepy groan, followed by the thud of weary footsteps as its mother struggles out of bed for the infant's moonlight feed.

All is quiet for a while as the child feeds, is cuddled and winded.

But afterwards, the worn-out parent is faced with a dilemma - put the now wide-awake child back to bed and endure an hour of crying, or cuddle up on the sofa and try to lull it back to sleep.
