SITTING in her Edinburgh home chatting with her daughter, Carolyn MacDougall looks fit and well.

A set of weights in the corner of the lounge is evidence of the active lifestyle the 53-year-old mother has always tried to lead - which made it all the more shocking when she was suddenly diagnosed with breast cancer.

Today, almost two years on, after suffering the trauma of having one of her breasts removed, Carolyn is among thousands of women who have volunteered to join a major new generational study investigating the causes of the deadly disease.
