HUNDREDS of heart attack victims in the Lothians are to receive instant specialist care for blocked arteries under plans to speed up their treatment.

A number of emergency patients who would normally be admitted to the Western General Hospital will go straight to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary as part of a shake-up of cardiac services.

Health bosses want to get rid of the laboratory facilities at the Western General, where patients receive angioplasty procedures to widen their arteries, because facilities at the ERI are more efficient.

This means that if paramedics suspect a heart attack victim will need this procedure, then they will be taken straight to the flagship hospital.
