Antal Dorati, 82, the Hungarian-born composer and conductor who
was known as an orchestra builder and was credited with bringing
about vast improvement in the National Symphony Orchestra here during
seven seasons as music director, died Sunday at his home at
Gerzensee, Switzerland.
His wife Ilsa von Alpenheim who reported his death gave no
additional details and the cause of death was not known.
Brought to Washington in 1970 specifically to elevate the
performance of the orchestra, Mr. Dorati was generally viewed as
having fulfilled his mandate, through improving the skills of
individual players, polishing the tone of the ensemble and expanding
the symphony's repertoire.
