SUCH is the level of concern that has been voiced in some quarters over the rising levels of violence and drunkenness in our city centre that the news that there is to be an increased police presence at weekends and late at night will be widely welcomed.

Although Edinburgh is regarded by most as a relatively safe city, recent figures have revealed a worrying trend towards drink-fuelled disorder, with community leaders in areas such as the Cowgate, Grassmarket and even the New Town voicing concern over loutish behaviour.
