This is the time of the year when a good hedge comes in handy.
The solid lines of a precisely sheared hedge surrounding a front
yard never fail to give a home a tidy, well-kept appearance. Privacy
is another time-honored objective, but as temperatures drop and begin
to fall below freezing, a dense evergreen hedge on the northern side
of the house performs a function dear to the heart of many a
gardener: It delays the withering away of vegetation and can make the
difference between a light touch of frost and a killing freeze. It
also reduces the wind's impact on the house, and some experts claim
that a strategically placed hedge can save as much as 10 percent in
heating bills.
