Article: Capital eye unit set for closure at weekends

HEALTH chiefs are considering closing the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion at weekends in a bid to end what is seen as a wasteful use of NHS cash.

The hospital is sometimes being kept open at weekends with five nurses, porters and security staff on duty to care for just one patient.

NHS Lothian believes it may be possible to close the hospital at weekends, saving a substantial amount of money, without damaging patient care.

But the move has raised concerns about the ability of city hospitals to provide emergency eye treatment.
