Opening his Charlin Jazz Society tribute to the prodigiously
gifted jazz pianist Art Tatum at Ellington Theater Saturday night,
Stanley Cowell did the sensible thing-he offered a disclaimer. The
concert, he said, was an attempt not to duplicate Tatum's virtuosity
but merely to evoke its complexity and richness.
That assignment alone would leave most pianists wanting, but
Cowell consistently rose to the task during the first set with aptly
