Article: Hospital bed occupancy in Lothians second highest in country

WARD beds in Lothian hospitals have the second highest occupancy rate in Scotland, according to new figures.

Nursing leaders said it is important to keep the number of occupied beds at a "safe and appropriate" level.

Studies have suggested lower occupancy rates can help prevent the spread of hospital "superbugs", such as MRSA. In the Lothians, bed occupancy rates for acute specialities are running at 86.2 per cent - a near-five percentage point rise since 1998.
