FORMER Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown has been offered a
Cabinet job as Northern Ireland Secretary by Prime Minister-in-
waiting Gordon Brown.
The Chancellor made the approach yesterday as the Liberal
Democrats were thrown into turmoil following the disclosure of a
meeting between Mr Brown and their leader Sir Menzies Campbell.
The Lib Dem leader ruled out the prospect of any Lib Dems serving
in Mr Brown's first Cabinet amid speculation about a deal.
But Lord Ashdown, one of Sir Menzies' predecessors as leader, told
today he was later offered a job in the Cabinet.
