Pete Dexter had his 15 minutes seven years ago, but they were the wrong ones.

Ever since the big tussle with the baseball bats outside the South Philly bar-we'll come back to that in a moment-Dexter has been applying himself to writing fiction. The critics have been impressed. Now there exists the possibility, one he modestly relishes, that Dexter might become better known as a novelist than as a street-fightin' newspaper columnist. Tomorrow the judges of the National Book Award might give his latest novel, "Paris Trout," its fiction prize. Or they might not.
