RICKY Gervais walks into the room, sits down at the desk opposite me, gets up again to shake my hand and then puts his feet on the desk and one hand on the knot of his tie. "How can I help you, the journalist, help the audience, who are my viewers, understand The Office vis--vis the medium of this interview," he asks while probing his ear with the eraser end of a pencil.

Except he doesn't, because that is what David Brent would do and, while Ricky Gervais, 41, may have created, directed and played the role of Brent, the Slough-based, syntactically-challenged middle manager in sitcom The Office, it doesn't do to confuse the two.

So instead Gervais just says: "Oh hello. You all right?" And ...
