Defrocked television evangelist Jim Bakker was indicted by a
federal grand jury yesterday on charges that he and another top
executive of the PTL ministry conspired to maintain their "lavish and
extravagant lifestyles" by bilking investors in vacation partnerships
at PTL's Heritage Village USA resort out of millions of dollars.
Bakker and former PTL executive vice president Richard W. Dortch
were charged with 24 counts of mail fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy
in an indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Charlotte, N.C.
In a separate indictment, Bakker's former special assistant,
David A. Taggart, and his brother, James H. Taggart, a former
interior designer for PTL, were ...
