IT IS the kind of drama opera-goers would normally expect to see
acted out on the stage of La Scala.
The latest developments in the controversial restoration of the
famous 18th century opera house have prompted the type of histrionics
normally associated with the works of Puccini and Verdi.
Outraged critics of the scheme are claiming that the venue has
been wrecked by developers, who they accuse of gutting large sections
of the building in Milan.
The building site at La Scala had been hidden from the public gaze
since the renovation work began in January. But after a request by
local councillors to visit the site was turned down, an enterprising
