EDINBURGH drew the short straw last night, with a November visit to the wild and woolly west of Ireland to play their semi-final of the Celtic Cup. Some reward for this comprehensive beating of Cardiff at chilled Meadowbank, in a match that featured some fine tries, three of them by props, and a display of power, pace and aggression by the blossoming Tom Philip in the centre.

Glasgow's fine win over Celtic League champions Munster at Hughenden on Friday night, and their home tie against Ulster in November, opens up the real possibility - and it is not often we can say this about any rugby competition - of an all-Scottish final. History beckons.
