Behind the acrimonious conflict between Israeli and American Jews
over defining who is a Jew lies a larger, even more serious dispute
over the role the state of Israel plays in the lives and loyalties of
Jewry in the diaspora.
Many analysts see the conflict as only one of a long list of
recent controversies that demonstrate a common theme: the inability
of brethren from the world's two centers of modern Jewry to
understand each other's deepest dreams and fears.
