The New Republic may not possess the beefy circulation other
magazines offer, but the weekly political journal's new publisher,
Joan Stapleton, thinks she can deliver to advertisers "the minds that
matter ... the opinion and policymaking elite of the country."
Stapleton, 35, who has been the magazine's associate publisher,
is replacing Jeffrey Dearth, who will continue as president of the
magazine's Washington-based parent company, The New Republic Inc.
Stapleton will be succeeded as associate publisher by Tom Hicks, the
magazine's circulation and operations director.
Dearth, 38, who was publisher for four years, said Stapleton's
