IT'S time to come clean and own up. I admit it: my fixation with
nymphs and stealing away for daylight trysts with lovely ladies of
the stream has turned into a winter-long affair.
Opening days on major rivers like Tay, Tweed and Dee have come and
gone, chances to meet up with the king of fish are there for the
taking, but it is the humble grayling my heart still yearns for.
I have become obsessed with trotting weighted nymphs in teams of
three along riverbeds, through water so clear the colour and hue of
every stone sparkles in the seductive light of February afternoons.
The last trip out in search of these alluring fish left me a
little rejected, it must be said, as close-up encounters ...
