FESTIVALS which attract hundreds of thousands to Edinburgh every
summer have become as much part of Scotland's heritage as any part of
the countryside. But there comes a time when even the most avid fan
of the arts fancies a break from the madding crowd and the endless
stream of eager promoters handing out a rain-forest's worth of
fliers.
This does not mean that you have to turn your back on everything
that the city has to offer, but you can escape to several places,
even for a few hours. Holyrood Park and Arthur's Seat offer the most
obvious destination, though this haven becomes a little crowded in
