THE talk of a record-breaking private equity deal sent shares in J Sainsbury soaring on Friday and had investment bankers rubbing their hands in anticipation of lucrative fees. Nonetheless, sentiment favoured no imminent action. Both the price and the stakes are high and some observers are having trouble making the numbers stack up.

There is a little suspicion that the interest expressed by a consortium comprising CVC, KKR and Blackstone contains a dose of bravado. Having conquered great swathes of mid-range companies, they are puffing out their chests for an assault on one of the FTSE-100 businesses, a family name to boot, that would be the ultimate notch on the bedpost.
