She laughs, she cries, she cheers, she mimes. It's a bravura
performance, and she doesn't even need a screen.
Carmen Maura, about to command widespread attention among
American film fans for the first time in the Spanish farce "Women on
the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," can whip up plenty of drama from
her hotel-room armchair. All she needs are a few props (a pack of
Marlboros, a glass of vodka), a couple of leading questions, and an
audience, however small.
Presenting, for example, Carmen Maura on the pleasures of being
recognized, for the first time, on the streets of New York: "Is very
special," she announces, vaulting right over the language barrier,
mostly ignoring her ...
