It had been 16 months since 1st Lt. George W. Williams, 24, began
his tour in West Germany, and he was grateful when his parents
surprised him with an early Christmas present: a plane ticket for his
first trip home to the small community of Joppatowne, Md.
But he became stuck in traffic when he set out Wednesday on the
60-mile drive north from the Bad Kreuznach Army base to the Frankfurt
am Main airport. And when his direct flight to Dulles International
Airport took off, it left Williams on the ground.
He cajoled Pan American airlines into giving him a seat on the
next flight, and made a quick phone call home. "He was just a little
