IT IS the cynical nature of this dumbed-down age that we debunk
our heroes.
Nelson hung from the yardarm the democrats who revolted against
the King of Naples, on the whim of Lady Hamilton. Today, he would be
in the human rights dock rather than celebrated for saving Europe
from a greater tyranny. Now it seems that the hero of a thousand
children's history books and the man whose technical genius gave us
the efficient steam engine, James Watt of Glasgow, was a bit of a
forger of musical instruments.
And so what? Galileo pretended he invented the telescope to raise
