Article: Fears for football as ITV Digital goes bust

THE government's strategy for the future of digital television was in ruins last night after ITV Digital was put into the hands of the administrators.

The company's demise threatens to plunge the lower divisions of English football into financial meltdown with up to 30 clubs facing ruin because of the withdrawal of broadcast revenue.

It will also severely undermine plans to make Britain the world's first fully-digital television nation by 2010 and leave Rupert Murdoch's Sky network with a stronger grip on the pay-to-view broadcasting market.

The owners of ITV Digital, Granada and Carlton, said they will keep the service on air while they consider their next move.
