Article: Beijing Protest Ends Peacefully;Police Tactics May Have Resulted in Uniting Students

Chinese students, who peacefully ended a march in Beijing's Tiananmen Square early this morning, were spurred on by the way the police handled earlier demonstrations, foreign observers here say.

Despite a ban on unauthorized demonstrations, about 1,000 students marched for nine miles in snow in the middle of the night to reach the square.

En route, the students trudged through lines of police who tried to block their path at four points. The police offered no further resistance.
