It was called an Inaugural Ball, and the setting, the Pension
Building, is about as gala and gorgeous as you can get in this city.
But just the same, the gala celebrating the reelection of Mayor
Marion Barry Friday night seemed more like a private party than a
public event. While there were a few full-skirted ball gowns, most
women had on their best dresses, as though they were going to the
boss' house for dinner. Or he was coming to theirs.
There was a lot of glitz-sequins and bugle beads and lame'.
Effi Barry got her gold metallic dress with cut-out back through the
