A PLAN to restore thousands of iron railings in Edinburgh, which
were removed in the early 1940s from many of the capital's more
important locations in a bid to help the war effort, has been tabled
by council leaders.
The initiative would see railings returned to many streets in the
city, helping to restore the physical landscape to the way it was
before the war.
The move was welcomed by conservationists yesterday who said the
loss of the Victorian and Georgian railings was a tragedy.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Lord Beaverbrook ordered
the tearing up and melting down of the country's entire stock of iron
