THE Liberal Democrats will today call for an overhaul of the laws
governing organ donation. They will demand that everyone should
automatically be considered a donor unless they specifically say they
do not wish their organs used after their death.
Dr Evan Harris, the Lib Dem health spokesman, denied the proposal
could lead to "organ harvesting" and claimed it would save thousands
of lives.
He said while 80 per cent of the public say they would donate,
only 30 per cent do, leading to a chronic shortage in organs -
especially hearts.
Dr Harris said: "This is an urgent problem. For every George Best,
there are many people in desperate need of a life-saving or life-
transforming transplant ...
